Used skis, baseball mitts, tennis rackets and more lined the fences around the Helen Keller Tennis Courts in Easton on Saturday for a good cause.
The Easton Learning Foundation held the used sporting goods sale for the third year in a row to raise money to go directly into Easton's classrooms. Locals donated more than 1,000 items over the past month, allowing the foundation to raise an estimated $2,000 to go toward classroom supplies and new technology.
"Community members donate to it, and then we sell it for very reasonable prices so the people who buy it feel good, too," said Bernadette Waterman of the foundation. She said that although the turnout was great, it has been better in past years.
The foundation hosts two other fundraisers during the yeara cocktail party at the Brooklawn Country Club in December and a Trivia Bee at Staples Elementary in May. In the past, it has raised money for Smart Boards for every classroom, a new Lego robotics laboratory at Staples and $115,000 for an engineering and innovation lab at Helen Keller.
The bargain prices bring in the customers every year, but they're not always buying for themselves, volunteer Don Landry says. "There's a bike that's been here through three different families. So as they use it, they bring it back, somebody [else] uses it," he said.
What about all of the extra gear that no one buys? The snow pants, the lefty golf club, the plastic sled? Anything that's not purchased goes to local charities or to the schools and Park and Recreation.
