School Bells Ring for Fido

Easton dog owners whose pets could benefit from obedience classes can get some help at the Easton Community Center. Dog trainer Julie Zbriger will give classes for both puppies and adult dogs starting Monday, Sept. 20.

Puppy Kindergarten will use reinforcement and praise (in the form of petting and treats) to teach young dogs the basics -- how to walk on a leash, sit, lie down and stay, all on command. Puppies will also learn to stop chewing, biting, digging and barking and potty training. The classes run Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m., Sept. 20 to Nov. 1.

“Just like kids, the earlier you start the better. If you start training them at a young age, then they don’t have the time to develop the bad habits. And once you have a bad habit it’s a lot harder to take it away or to teach them not to have that bad habit,” Zbriger said.

Classes for adult dogs reinforce obedience to the basic commands and address behaviors they may not have learned as puppies. They are given on Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m., Sept. 20 to Nov. 1.
