The crowds will be rushing to get to the food and festivities at the Emmanuel Church Fair in Weston from the moment it opens at 10 a.m. Saturday, says the retiring Rev. David Feyrer, who will be hosting his last fair before moving to North Carolina with his family.
"You'll see sort of a wild mob of people at the gate when we open it up. It's really kind of funny," says the pastor, who has led Emmanuel Episcopal Church since 2002.
The crowds will fill the grounds of the church on Lyons Plain Road until 4 p.m. for food, bands, crafts, baked goods made by parishioners, and a giant "Good Goods" tag sale. The church has been collecting jewelry, gardening items and unusual treasures for three months, says Feyrer, who will be retiring and moving in a few weeks.
"I look forward to the whole thing because, first of all, it's a great effort on the part of our congregation," he said. "But the other part of it is ... we then welcome the public to come visit us. Obviously we want them to buy stuff, but it's a matter of visiting our grounds and seeing our new place."
The reverend says the fair is unique in that there are no vendors; everything is the work of members of the congregation.
"The general excitement of the total congregation participation is kind of hard to explain, and it's hard to imagine. But that's what's neat about this," he said when asked what he will miss most about the church fair. "It's total participation by everybody to put on this event for the community."
The congregation will throw a farewell dinner for the Feyrer family after the fair.
