Residents Take the Plunge at Compo for Charity

Taking a dip in the bone-chilling waters at Westport's Compo Beach is without a doubt a cool way to start the New Year. And that's exactly what dozens of daring men, women and children did Saturday morning.

Although going for a swim at the beach on the first day of January might seem totally insane, the New Year's Day plungers braved the chilly water for good causes: Participants raised money for organizations of their choosing. Some organizations that benefited from the Polar Bear Plunge included Westport's Save the Children and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

And though the swimmers were greeted with sunny skies and air temperatures in the 40s, it certainly wasn't a typical day at the beach with water temperatures near 40.
