Take six ladies, some sewing supplies and a passion for creativity and voilà: The Loose Threads are born.
The group comprises local residents Sandy Dadik, Dayna Harris, Laurie Culwell, Mary Lou Lynch, Marilyn Kirchner and Karin Giannitti. What started as a hobby six years ago has developed into a veritable tour de force of colorful expression and clever imagination. The ladies who speak together as one and preferred to be quoted as one have curated several shows since 2006 in Weston and the surrounding area.
"We've given quilts away to different charities," they said. "And we're always interested in having new people join the group."
Taking inspiration from nature and personal experiences, the Loose Threads commit themselves to developing quilts that reflect the times. Culwell put together one quilt with a red, white and blue color scheme as a tribute to veterans. One side of the quilt is a pattern of various squares and right angles, and on the other side is an American flag with the Pledge of Allegiance sewn into the fabric.
The ladies said it can take several months to complete some quilts, but only three weeks or less is needed to finish more simple patterns.
More than 20 decorative quilts will be on display at the Weston Public Library until Dec. 3, courtesy of the Loose Threads. The quilts are for viewing only, but the ladies occasionally hold auctions to raise money for breast cancer research, Habitat for Humanity, Veterans of Foreign Wars and The Susan Fund.
