Pop Artist Delves Into Collages at Easton Library

EASTON, Conn. – What do a cereal box, glue and the Declaration of Independence have in common? According to pop artist Michael Albert, they make for one heck of an art piece.

Albert will be on hand at the Easton Public Library on Saturday to conduct a series of workshops for budding artists of all ages on his medium of choice: collages. “We are really excited about this unique program and are hoping it opens a lot of children’s eyes to the kinds of art that is out there,” said Lyn Zaffino, children’s librarian.

According to his website, while Albert was attending business school at New York University, he started to experiment with magic markers and wax oil sticks. He soon found his passion for creating and began using items that seemed to have no practical use once the contents were empty, such as cereal boxes, labels, leftover stickers and pictures. Albert turned these items, which some would consider trash, into collages with themes that are fun, humorous or political.

On Saturday, Eastonites can learn all about Albert’s work as he presents his recycled cereal box collage workshop at the Easton Public Library. During the event, Albert will make a short presentation about his art and then participants will create their own pop art out of consumer packaging, old photographs, discarded cardboard and other raw materials.

“I think this will be something that everyone will enjoy. We never had someone like Michael Albert come to the library. We think it’s a great idea and something really unique,” said Zaffino.

This program will consist of two separate sessions. Each is free and two hours long. The first session is 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. The second session will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. for children in fifth through 12th grade and adults.

Albert’s book, “An Artist’s America,” introduces children to pop art and is suitable for ages 8 and up. It will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

A collection of Albert’s collages will be on exhibit in the library through Feb. 14. Registration is required for the Saturday event. Please call the library at 203-261-0134. Also, interested parties should bring cereal boxes and 6-inch by 9-inch cardboard to the workshop.
