WESTPORT, Conn. Paul L. Hopkins III, a former Westport resident and former co-owner of the Georgetown Saloon, died April 24 at Adirondack Medical Center after a long illness. He was 58.
Known to family and friends as "Hop," he was born in Syracuse, N.Y., to Paul L. Hopkins Jr. and Mary Patricia Kendrick Chase. He grew up in Westport and graduated from Staples High School in 1971.
Hopkins went on to study theater at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vt., graduating in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in theater arts. After graduation, he stayed for a year at the school working for the theater department.
He then began his career in the restaurant business as part owner of the Georgetown Saloon, a popular establishment in Georgetown. He traveled the country extensively, living in Vail, Colo.; San Francisco; Charleston, S.C.; and finally Lake Placid, N.Y., where he spent time as a young man.
Hopkins enjoyed many outdoor activities, including hiking, sailing, skiing and golf. He liked to read and loved theater and film.
Although he suffered the early loss of his parents and a brother, Damian Peter Hopkins, he is survived by a large extended family, including two maternal aunts, Sheila Ryan, of Vero Beach, Fla., and Joanne Gorman of Cortland, N.Y.; a maternal uncle, John "Jack" Kendrick of Stockholm, Sweden; a maternal aunt, Agnes Kendrick Reiss, of Westport; and 18 first cousins.
His favorite charity was the National Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Donor Registry. Memorial donations may be made to the foundation, the Lake Placid Library or a favorite charity.
There are no calling hours at his request. There will be a private burial at St. Agnes Cemetery in Lake Placid at the convenience of the family.
