Open House Teaches Fire Safety

Kids, and adults too, who've never seen the Jaws of Life in action will have their chance at the Weston Volunteer Fire Department's Open House. In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, the annual event will teach kids about fire prevention, courtesy of Smokey the Bear, how to escape from a fire and all about what firefighters do, according to Robert Laplaca, chair of the event.

And everyone can climb aboard the engines, from a restored 1930s Mack to the newest apparatus. Firefighters will demonstrate how they use all of their equipment, and there will be prizes and face-painting for the kids, who will also get to don firefighter gear and parents can have their children photographed and fingerprinted in case they ever get lost.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Norfield station, 52 Norfield Road. For more information, call the department at (203) 222-2647, or send an e-mail.
