Easton was all agricultural attitude Saturday as it celebrated its annual Country Fair and Cow Chip Raffle. First Selectman Tom Herrmann sat on a tractor and pulled a wagon load of children around the library. And on the green, those who had plopped down $25 for a raffle ticket circled Dewey the Cow to see where he would leave his first "deposit."
Ticketholders bought a square of ground, and the owner of the one favored by Dewey won $500. Fair official said the winner would be announced later.
"It's a good combination of the farms and animals and everything else Easton has to offer," said Todd Johnston as he watched his 2-year-old son, Nathan, ride a pony with a volunteer's help.
The town's second annual Country Fair was organized by the Friends of the Easton Library, but the organization's president, Clair Meskers, said it was a true community effort. Some 25 adults and 25 kids volunteered their time. Sherwood Farm and Sport Hill Farm donated corn, Easton Park and Recreation helped set up the tents, a mom and her children made caramel apples to sell and others brought their livestock and eggs laid by their own chickens.
In addition to pony rides, kids could pet the first selectman's sheep, Boscoe and Lamby. As for the raffle, Friend of the Library member Pat Sotisiak said the idea came from a member who had seen one in another town. "Someone had been at a fair upstate that had this, and they just thought it would be fun for Easton, which is also a farming community," she said.
