The Levitt Pavilion has produced 40 seasons of free arts and entertainment for Westport and neighboring communities. The group is building a new facility for the next 40 years and beyond.

The construction is part of a comprehensive capital campaign by the Friends of the Levitt Pavilion. Earlier this year, Executive Director Freda Welsh, Chairman Janet Plotkin, and Marketing & Development Director Carleigh Welsh delivered a check for $4.75 million -- the funds needed for the completion of the construction phase of the project -- to Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff.

In addition, the Levitt Pavilion also applied for and was awarded grants for the project from the state of Connecticut totaling $950,000. Last year, the Westport Board of Finance and the Representative Town Meeting approved a $1 million contribution from the town.

Fund-raising for the project is ongoing, Levitt officials said. Before raising the funds necessary for construction and to secure town and state support, the organization underwrote the costs of the development and design of the new facility. Funds are being raised to both replenish the endowment and to fund the planned operating and programming costs associated with the new Levitt Pavilion's transformed site and 21st-century structure.

The new Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts is scheduled to be completed in time for its 2014 summer season.
