EASTON, Conn. - James Johnson Mellen, a lifelong resident of Easton, died March 23 at The Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford, Conn. He was 72.
As a member emeritus of the Easton Republican Town Committee, he served on the Planning and Zoning Board and was a justice of the peace and constable. Mellen was an active member of the Congregational Church of Easton, Easton Historical Society, Easton Cemetery Committee and the Easton Senior Center.
He was born July 1, 1939 to the late Francis P. Mellen and Doris Ward. After attending Easton schools and Bassick High School, Mellen graduated from Norwalk State Technical School.
Mellen retired from Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford after many years with Pitney Bowes in Stamford and U.S. Chrome in Stratford. He was a past Master of Ashlar and Aspetuck Lodge 142 in Easton and Corinthian Lodge 104 in Fairfield. Mellen was a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Twilight Club and Police Square Club.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Laurie Dann Mellen; his son, Dwight James Mellen of Newtown; his stepson, Ted (Sally) LeBouthillier of Fairfield; his daughter, Pamela (Travis) Zellner of Massachusetts; his brother, David Mellen of Illinois; his sister, Melinda Lasczak of New Hampshire; and four grandchildren.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Abriola Parkview Funeral Home in Trumbull, with a service of honor performed by the Masonic order at 7 p.m. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Congregational Church of Easton, followed by burial in Union Cemetery in Easton.
