Easton resident Kelly Solway is doing her part to battle blood cancers in Connecticut. Solway manages the Team Z campaign at the Center for Integrated Medicine in Darien. This spring, the group will launch a fund-raising campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Meriden.
Team Z was started by cancer survivor Dr. Robert Zembroski to help others afflicted with the diseases. Zembroski is up for the Society's 2011 Man of the Year award.
Solways team kicks off its 10-week campaign on Tuesday, March 1, by honoring a 4-year-old cancer survivor. "I hope I can hold back a tear," Solway said, adding that she has a child only one year older. "I'm lucky enough to say that I haven't had any family members have any type of blood cancers."
Solway and her husband moved to Easton from Fairfield 11 years ago. When her youngest child entered kindergarten last year at Samuel Staples, she decided to go back to work. Before having children she worked as a recruiter in the health care industry in Darien, so jumping back into the workforce came naturally.
When she's not working, she volunteers with the Girl Scouts and at various local chapters of the National Charity League. She also owns an etiquette business, One Etiquette Place, and offers classes through the Easton Community Center, although since starting work in Darien she hasn't promoted her own business.
"Anytime anybody needs me to, I step up and do the class," she said. On her web site, Solway says, "Etiquette is really about the Golden Rule. ... I would like to have people understand that civility is back. You know, you have to be kind to other people."
Team Zs mission to eradicate blood cancer seems to be a good fit for Solway and her passion for kindness and desire to battle for a good cause.
