EASTON, Conn. While many of us are focused on people in need during the holidays, some Easton teens are taking care of Easton Animal Control shelter.
The teens got the idea of gathering goods for the new shelter during a teen committee meeting at the center," said Billy Barrett, director of Easton's Teen Center. "They started brainstorming about possible community service projects and they came up with the animal shelter because they really wanted to help out the animals."
The teens put out drop boxes at the Easton Public Library and asked residents to donate anything and everything pet related. The teens collected dog food, toys and dog beds all for the new shelter.
The teen committee's goal is to teach its members leadership skills that they can take with them into adulthood, Barrett said. Throughout the year, members of the committee volunteer across the region. The teens have donated items to underprivileged kids in the inner city, held food drives and worked with Easton's elderly.
I think its a good idea to get the teens involved in volunteering so they learn the struggles that some people go through," he said. "In some of these projects the teens will see things they have never seen before."
