Is there anything barking up your Christmas tree this year? If not, than perhaps it's time to give the gift of a furry friend, compliments of the Easton Animal Shelter.
Animal Control Officer Kelly Fitch has several canines and kitties looking for homes. "If they're spayed or neutered you get them for $5," Fitch said. "They've had all their shots, and they're good to go."
One of the pups is Chloe, a weimaraner-pit bull mix. "She was in a house with another dog that beat her up," Fitch said. "So if she goes to a house with another dog, it's important that they meet first. She might be a little weary."
Then there's Pedro, a Chihuahua whose bark was fading after long shouting matches with his caged brethren. Pedro has not been neutered, so adopting him would cost $50. But it would come with a discount for the operation at participating facilities, Fitch said.
Wesley, another mixed breed, has been at the shelter for six months but was recently adopted. He couldn't wait to go to his new home, as his rapid barking seemed to indicate.
Several cats are also available, and Fitch said she's seen a sharp increase in stray cats being brought to the shelter. In the past, the shelter has housed goats, chickens, ferrets and rabbits. It has even seen its fair share of parakeets and cockatoos.
The shelter rarely euthanizes animals. "Only if they're really sick or aggressive," Fitch said. "We give them a few weeks, though, before deciding. If we have to put down one a year, that's a big deal for us."
The shelter on Westport Road has space for seven dogs. The new building opening in February will hold 12 dogs, a number of cats, and it will have an office, a bathroom and a cleaning room.
