Easton Neighbors Notes

As the year wraps up for Samuel Staples Elementary School, librarian Mrs. Duffy has her hands full. All of her 700 students have been asked to prepare their summer reading lists, and the inquiries have started pouring in. The message to students this summer is that reading is for pleasure and that they are encouraged to read every day in order to maintain their fluency and stamina for the fall school year. This summer, the reading method of the third thru six grade students will be tracked.

This year is very special for Mrs. Duffy since the 2011 graduating class started kindergarten at SSES in 2005, the same year she did. She has truly enjoyed getting to know all of the students and knows the name of every child in the fifth grade. Her love of children and books is readily seen, and SSES is lucky to have such a dedicated and caring librarian.

What an exciting time for Brownie Troop 31040.  On Monday night, June 20th, Caryn Jack and Mona Cascella invited all of the girls’ families to the Community Room at the Easton Public Library. These dedicated troop leaders led the girls through a meaningful commitment ceremony that was packed with tradition. The ceremony was an investiture and rededication program to celebrate the end of the year. Each girl lit a candle and passed it on as a sign loyalty and honor for her ascension to the next level. Each was called up and pinned by Mona Cascella with a shiny gold star that sits on a green background. After refreshments, the girls were dazzled by The Amazing Andy, a talented Magician who was not only entertaining but came with a cute little helper named Willy Wonka. The bunny, a girl scout’s dream come true, stole the show!

Congratulations and a big welcome to Laura Boffa, who will join Caryn and Mona in September to serve as a leader. The girls who received honors are:

Olivia Cascella, Annika Jack, Emily Wegener, Caroline Gomolak, Claire Kocis, Kate Solway, Juliana Stavola , Giavanna Bravo Ibanez, Gwen Kovac, Athena Lagaros, Callie Standen, Addisen Westphalen, Katie McElwee, Jaime Chan, Aryan Jones, Emily Grobs and Julia Boffa.

The Samuel Staples Elementary School Choral Concert was held in the Cafetorium Thursday night. The talented array of fourth- and fifth-grade singers was lead by two very talented teachers, Mr. Russo and Mr. Clark. The delivery was vibrant and the songs were both meaningful and uplifting. The final performance for this year’s SSES graduating seniors included “Time To Say Goodbye (Con te Partiro),” which was sung in Italian by the select choir of the fifth grade. Some of the students who participated were: Finn Navin, Skylar TelescoTeresa DeStephano, Mark LichtmanAshleigh Eden, McKenzie Wenzel, Maddie Massie and Kasey Hartman.

Donna Viselli and Eileen Canestrini advised the students on the correct Italian pronunciation, and the song was dedicated to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cicchetti, who is leaving at the end of the year and will be missed by everyone.

There was a huge audience to support these talented students. The fall and spring concerts at SSES are a pleasure to attend even if you don't have a child in the school system.
