Even with being a part of such a small town, the Easton Garden Club is one of the larger clubs in the area, with membership reaching about 65 on its mailing list. The club has been sharing its love of gardening and beautifying the town since it began in 1938.
Together, the members keep up the historic gardens at the Bradley-Hubbell house on the Black Rock Turnpike and tend to flower boxes and "adopt-a-spot" locations all over town. The club is famous for its Mother's Day weekend Garden Mart sale, when members sell 500 to 600 different herbs, unusual perennials and other plants that they nurtured themselves. Club vice president Cynthia Carlson said people come from all over in search of low-priced plants and gardening advice.
But the Easton Garden Club's work does not stop when the flowers lose their last petalsit continues throughout the year. Locals can preorder homemade holiday wreaths in December and volunteers deliver poinsettias to seniors.
"I think it's a great club, and I encourage people to attend meetings," Carlson said. "We're always looking for new faces and new ideas."
Anyone interested in joining is encouraged to contact the club now before the welcome back picnic in September. It holds monthly meetings beginning in September on the second Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. in the Easton Public Library's community room. Meetings feature talks by gardening experts, which in the past have included a docent from the New York Botanical Gardens.
