EASTON, Conn. -- If hanging out with members of the community doesn't convince you to attend Easton's annual Farm Tour, then the free samples should.
"There's a hometown feel on the Firemen's Green. Last year, everyone was sitting around with pizzas on blankets, meeting with neighbors," said Lori Cochran, co-chair of the event. "They said they were so surprised and amazed at what the farmers are doing with their properties."
The Farm Tour, sponsored by the Citizens or Easton, is on Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those attending can meet up at the Firemen's Green for a map and guide to the day's events. You can come and go as you please but organizers recommmend stopping at the green first to get a guide.
Cochran said it's important for residents to come see the farms because "it's important to know what we need to protect in town. Easton is a very unique town because of the fact that we have so much agriculture. We should be aware of what the farmers contribute back to the community."
Thirteen farms are participating. There will be samples, horseback riding, hay rides and more. The Easton Public Library will host a showing of a film featuring Easton's farms on the half hour starting at 10:30 a.m. Skinny Pines will provide wood-fired pizza on the green and there will be about five non-profit organizations participating, including the Aspetuck Land Trust, the Historical Society of Easton and the Easton Garden Club.
Cochran said she loves the corn grown by the Popp family at Samuel Staples Elementary School.
"Maybe it's the community behind it that makes it taste so good," said Cochran.
