EASTON, Conn. Food tastings, pony rides, honey displays and more were the order of the day Saturday at the Easton Farm Tour, where residents and visitors explored the agrarian roots of the town.
The fourth annual Farm Tour, sponsored by Citizens for Easton, drew more than 300 people to the Firehouse Green, where they signed up to get programs that directed them to the individual farms.
Eastonite George Shrade brought his daughter, Marissa, 7, to Buttonwood Farm on Center Road, where she enjoyed a pony ride. Shes having fun, and we plan on going to a couple of other farms, he said.
At Daves Honey Farm on Sport Hill Road, Dave Bloche displayed a variety of spring honeys and beeswax candles and an observation hive.
The queen is visible, he said, directing viewers to the hive where the queen bee marked with a yellow spot buzzed amidst the other bees.
Silvermans Farm on Sport Hill Road features an animal park across the street where Grazi Carletto, from Trumbull, brought her daughter, Sophia, 6, who fed a few pygmy goats.
We went pony riding first. Its a wonderful event, she said. I asked her if she wanted to go to the library or the Farm Tour and she said the Farm Tour.
There were also activities on the Firehouse Green, from live music by the String Fingers Band, featuring Dan Tressler and David Kaye on guitar, banjo and dobro, to family games, including a sack race.
The tour preserves the character and history that is so uniquely Easton that celebrates the tradition, said Jean Statz Puchalski, co-chair of the Easton Farm Tour.
