Easton Blueberries Ready, But You Can't Pick Them

EASTON, Conn. – Sweet, plump blueberries are available now at Silverman’s Farm on Sport Hill Road, Easton, but you can’t pick them yourself.

“This is the second year for blueberries and the bushes are too small,” said Irv Silverman, who manages the farm that was started by his father Benjamin in the 1920s. “We’ll have pick-your-own next year when the bushes are bigger.”

He said they’re 18 inches to two feet now, but grow six to eight inches a year and will be as high as six feet someday.

Duke and Blue Ray blueberries are grown on the farm, the most popular berries in the Northeast, Silverman said.

They’ll be picked daily for the next three to four weeks and must be picked daily because they don’t all ripen at once, he said.

For pick-your-own fruit fans, peaches and apples will be available at Silverman Farm soon, with peaches from late July through August and 18 varieties of apples through October.
