Weston resident Alex Gunuey, one of the newest merchants to join the Westport Farmers' Market, is targeting an audience that walks on four legs instead of two. Strange? Not when you consider Gunuey is selling made-from-scratch, organic dog food, named Bone A Part.
Every Thursday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Imperial Avenue parking lot, visitors to the market can find Gunuey selling Bone A Part by the jar fulls.
A chef of 20 years, Gunuey, 50, said he joined the Farmers' Market as a way to test his product out. "I need to see if the product sells," Gunuey said. "The idea to attend farmers' markets is to build clientele. And there are so many products out there, it's important to explain why yours is better."
As Gunuey explained, Bone A Part is better than conventional dog food because it's made with fresh vegetables from his garden, organic rice, and naturally raised meat or chicken. "Dogs can eat a lot of things we can't, but chemicals should never pop into the equation," Gunuey said.
Over at the Nothin' But Premium Snack Bars tent, where you'll be greeted by a variety of homemade granola bars, Westporter Gordon Graham said he and his wife Jerri use the market as a testing arena as well. "We try-out all of our newest flavors here and get customer feedback," said Graham, 44.
What makes Nothin' But granola bars better than store brand finds? The ingredients, said Graham. "All the ingredients we use are readily available," said Graham, 44. "Our core ingredients include oats and different types of nuts. There's nothing in them you can't find naturally."
The history behind creating Nothin' But is simple, Graham said. "Basically, we were faced with the problem of finding a good snack for our daughter," Graham said. "Upset with what companies put on the selves, my wife decided to make one herself."
