Devil's Den Seeks Volunteers to Maintain Trails

WESTON, Conn. – Devil’s Den Preserve, with more than 20 miles of trails on 1,756 acres, relies on volunteers to maintain its paths. It will hold a training session for prospective volunteers from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Wilderness-loving families and individuals are invited to the Trail Adopters training session. Attendees will hike to points within the preserve where activities will be demonstrated.

Cynthia Fowx, volunteer coordinator for The Nature Conservancy, an international organization with a Connecticut branch that maintains the preserve, said the training program will introduce assigned routes in the preserve, which include the Laurel Trail and others that wind past Godfrey Pond, the Great Ledge and other scenic points.

Trail adopter duties include reporting trail conditions, refreshing the colored blazes on the trail markers, and pruning and reporting fallen trees and branches.

Devil’s Den Preserve currently has 15 volunteers and is looking to add about five more Saturday, Fowx said.

“Dress for the weather and hiking and bring a refillable water bottle,” she said. “We’ll provide tools, training materials and gloves.”

The Devil’s Den Preserve is located at 33 Pent Road off Godfrey Road West.
