'Bye, Mom!' Heard As School Opens

Parents tried to squeeze in one last hug for the morning as their children filed into Hurlbutt Elementary for the first day of school on Thursday. School staff greeted their new students with open arms at the doors while they excitedly waved goodbye to their families.

Beth Semaya said she had no problem getting her daughters out of bed and out the door this morning.

"They actually got up earlier, they had all their clothes laid out, they knew they wanted braids. They were right on schedule ready to go," she said of her 7-year-old, Emily, and her 5-year-old, Jamie, who was starting her first day of kindergarten. "Jamie has the teacher Emily had so she's very excited."

Martine Cuomo got her three sons together for a photo or two before they went to meet their teachers for the first time. "It's the first year of kindergarten for these two," she said as she ran to give her twin five-year-olds Owen and Gavin and 7-year-old Max a hug before a teacher led them through the doors. They each yelled and waved cheerily, "Bye, Mom!" as they went off to meet their classmates for the new school year.
