Authors Offer Eastonites Killer Advice

Author Jessica Speart of Easton upset many of her readers when she killed a dog in one of her books. Speart will be speaking Saturday and Sunday about mistakes writers wish they had never made and true crime at Murder 203: Connecticut’s Mystery Festival.

The writing event will be at the Easton Public Library on April 9 and 10. Speart will join 20 authors, including Carolyn Hart as the guest of honor, in a panel discussion on mystery writing. Speart launched a new narrative non-fiction thriller “Winged Obsession,” on Tuesday, based on illegal butterfly smuggling. To complete the novel, Speart went undercover to Japan to speak with Yoshi Kojima, whom she calls the “kingpin of butterfly smugglers.” The Murder 203 conference is for readers, authors and people who love mysteries and books, Speart said. She said attendees will learn about the publishing world and how to make it in this market.“The writer can control the outcome. And in real life, when there isn’t always justice, the bad guy gets off,” Speart said of why people love mystery novels. “There’s a hunger for justice that prompts the writer to go into mysteries.”Tickets for Murder 203 are $75 and include two full days of author panels and talks for readers and aspiring writers; book signings; giveaways and free raffles; silent and live auctions; two breakfasts and Saturday lunch; and a Cocktails & Crime reception Saturday evening.
