Aquatics Director Gets Expanded Role at Westport YMCA

WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport Weston Family Y aquatics director Nicole Turechek will have an expanded role with the organization, including oversight of swim lessons, pool scheduling, lifeguards and teaching staff.

Turechek will also coordinate a variety of special events, including the Family Y’s annual Point to Point Compo Beach Swim, one of Westport’s longest-running annual charitable sporting events.

One of Turechek’s first activities is a new event she is planning for the April 16-20 school break. Called “Splash Week,” it will feature a 30-minute swim lesson Monday through Thursday and a free swim on Friday. Wednesday's sessions will feature a special visit from Stewie the Duck, who will talk to the kids about swim safety.

“As our community’s leading provider of swim lessons for generation after generation of local children, the Family Y is always looking for fun new ways to promote our instructional programs for this vital life skill,” Turechek said. “With daily 30-minute sessions and the fun, engaging things Stew Leonard’s water-safety foundation is adding to the mix, we think Splash Week is going to be very popular and a great introduction to our other learn-to-swim programs.”

Thanks to the support from the Stew Leonard III Children's Charities, the cost is only $10 for the week – and all participating kids receive free water-safety gifts. There are several morning sessions from which to choose, for preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) as well as children ages 6 to 12. To register, visit westporty.org.

Turechek will also direct the Hafaday Summer Swim Lesson Program. Designed for children ages 4 to 8 and held each weekday from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Hafaday is primarily a swim program, with both a lesson and a free swim period each day. Arts and crafts, music and gym time, including yoga, karate and games, round out each morning of fun.

Turechek will also coordinate the lifeguard training/certification courses. A spring class will be held May 12-13 and May 19-20.

Along with Mark Sedlak, the head coach for the Water Rat Swim Team, Turechek  is in charge of the Family Y’s 34th annual Point to Point Compo Beach Swim. This year’s event, scheduled for Sunday, July 15, will include a “Kids’ Swim,” a fun, shallow-water event. Registration ($35 advance; $45 day of race) is now underway; day-of-race registration and check-in begin at 8 a.m., and the race begins at 9:30.
