Fun, laughter and the smell of popcorn are in the air in Easton. The Easton Volunteer Fire Dept. officially kicked off its 75th annual carnival celebration Tuesday night. Carnival goers agree that the festivities, which continue until Saturday, bring families and friends together, even if you're not from town.
Fairfield resident Dante Gaudio, brings his family to the event every year. His mother visits from Vermont just to go to the carnival with the family. "The kids get to do the rides, they scream and yell and have a great time, it's awesome," said Gaudio, who watched 2-year-old Ava and 4-year-old Andre on a kiddy ride. He enjoys the classic feel of the event. "It's very New England, it kind of has that old school feel to it."
Seven-year-old Charlotte Robins and her father Scott, came to the carnival to reconnect with some of Charlotte's old friends that she knew when she used to go to school in Easton. The best ride in the whole place, says Charlotte, is the rip cord, which shoots your seat high in the air and drops suddenly. "I don't have enough time to scream so my mouth is just open," she said. "It's a great sense of community, you get so many people from so many different towns," said Scott, who lives in Fairfield.
Jennifer Fraczek said her family never misses the carnival. "We bring the grandkids every year, every year there's another one," said Fraczek, adding that each year they get braver and more willing to try the larger rides.
"It's really like the major social event of Easton," said a volunteer fireman, Gerry Mulligan, who stood by the raffle tent for the brand new 2010 Camaro. "You can see all the kids showing up because they like the rides and people like the food. They just like being out on beautiful nights like this in a beautiful town like Easton."
