From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., yoga sessions will be held every hour on Veterans Green to benefit the Smilow Family Breast Health Center of Norwalk Hospital. The sessions will be conducted by instructors from various local yoga studios, including M3 Yoga, Saugatuck Studios, the Westport Weston Family Y, Oxygen Fitness in New Canaan, Yoga for Everybody in Fairfield, Darien's Venture Yoga and Yogapata in Wilton.

“We’re excited to be hosting an event in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said Cathy Colgan of the Westport Downtown Merchants Association, which is organizing the event with Westport’s Lululemon Athletica.

“Yoga has gained in popularity, and people who practice yoga enjoy practicing in different places, so we thought it would be nice to bring people out on the Green to practice yoga in a community setting in support of breast cancer patients in the community.”

In addition to yoga, guided meditation sessions will also take place throughout the day. The classes are suitable for people of all ages and experience levels.

The event will also include a variety of raffle prizes, donated by local businesses, Colgan said.

There is a suggested donation of $25 per yoga class. Money raised during the event will help support the Smilow Family Breast Health Center’s efforts to provide integrative medicine therapies to all patients. These therapies include reiki, acupuncture, medical massage and reflexology, qigong, tai chi, yoga, meditation, and nutrition and supplement counseling.

"The inclusion of integrative medicine therapies available at Norwalk Hospital not only can help relieve the side effects of medical treatment, but also help regain sense of control and well-being," said Zarek Mena, certified patient navigator at the Smilow Center.

Representatives from the Smilow Center will be available at Yoga on the Green to discuss this importance of integrative medicine therapies.

The first yoga class of the day will begin at 9 a.m. and the last class will begin at 3 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring mats or towels.

Also this weekend, the Westport Downtown Merchants Association is hosting its second annual Biergarten on the Green.

From 1 to 5 p.m.. Saturday, those 21 and over can sample a wide variety of award-winning local, national and international craft and micro brews. Seasonal food such as knockwurst, bratwurst, pulled pork and chili will be available for purchase and there will be live music provide by the Zany Oompah Band. Admission is $30 at the gate.
