The event will include a lecture from 2 to 3 p.m. on “What Tips Your Balance?” From 3 to 4:30 p.m., balance screenings and an exercise demonstration will take place.
People who are age 65 and older are at high risk for fatal or nonfatal injuries due to falling. The older a person gets, the more susceptible they are to falling. The injuries that ensue cost billions of dollars to treat, not to mention the danger of death from the falls.
When senior citizens take part in physical activities such as balance and strength training, and exercises that increase flexibility, the risk of falling is decreased. Reviewing medication regularly can also help, as can eye and ear exams and inspecting the home to make sure that there are no dangers.
At the Fall Prevention Program, seniors and caretakers can get a number of tips, and participate in screenings, to help ensure safety from falling injuries. The Westport Weston Health District is at 21 Imperial Ave.
