Sign Up At Westport Weston Y For Cancer Prevention Study

WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Westport Weston Family YMCA was recently selected as an enrollment site for anyone interested in joining a new cancer prevention study.

The American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study-3 is a "long-term research project" and "the nation’s largest study of the causes of cancers," according to a news release. The study begins with an appointment at the Westport Weston Family YMCA between 8 a.m. and noon on Nov. 19. The Society’s kick-off informational meeting starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Room 137 of Fairfield University’s Bannow Science Center, 1073 N. Benson Road in Fairfield.

Those eligible to participate include anyone between 30 and 65 years old, has never been diagnosed with cancer (not including basal or squamous cell skin cancer) and is willing to make a long-term commitment to the study that involves completing periodic follow-up surveys at home, according to the release.

“Our Y is proud to be a host site for this lifesaving opportunity,” said Shelley Moll, Health and Wellness Director, in the release. “As a community leader in healthy living, we feel it's important to communicate wellness for all our members, and the Cancer Prevention Study-3 will help us all better understand how we can lead healthier lives.”

At the Nov. 19 appointment, participants will be asked to "read and sign an informed consent form, complete a brief written survey, have their waist measured and give a small blood sample drawn by a trained, certified phlebotomist," according to the release.

CPS-3 is not a clinical study so participants will not receive individual blood test results, according to the release.

“We hope, one day, to live without fear of the threat of cancer, but in the meantime we can offer hope for survivors as well as our active support of this important new study,” said Shelley Moll in the release. “As one study volunteer said, ‘If participating in this study could mean that even just one person could be spared a cancer diagnosis, it would be the most important and meaningful action to fight cancer.’”

To enroll, residents are asked to visit the American Cancer Society's website or call 888-604-5888. The Family Y is at 59 Post Road East in downtown Westport.
