Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, "Godspell" is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time.

Based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, and featuring a sparkling score by Stephen Schwartz, Godspell boasts a string of well-loved songs. Several cast albums have been released over the years and one of its songs, "Day by Day" from the original cast album, reached #13 on the Billboard singles chart in 1972.

Drawing from various theatrical traditions, such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, Godspell is a groundbreaking and unique reflection on the life of Jesus, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love. The Wall Street Journal described it as “A family-friendly show that deserves to run forever!” and New York Magazine advised readers to “Go forth and enjoy!”

“I love 'Godspell' because it was purposefully written with beautiful songs and messages, but is wide open to interpretation," Director Maggie Pangrazio commented on the show. "You can see 100 versions and still be seeing it for the first time. It also appeals to all ages with music that has something for everyone: beautiful harmonies, silly kid-friendly songs, and timeless classics. I have no doubt that you will walk out singing!”

The Westport cast includes: Juan Ayala, Emily Beers, Jessica Braun, Caitlin Brown, Tyler Campbell, Betzabeth Castro, Rosalind Cormier, Dena Lagonigro, Katherine Logan, Rob Pawlikowski, and Bill Warncke.

Performances are from June 3 through June 26, on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and on Sundays at 2 p.m., with Thursday performances on June 9 and June 16 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $28, $26 for seniors and students, and can be purchased at westportcommunitytheatre.com or by calling (203) 226-1983.
