The reading and planting will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Lachat Farm on Godfrey Road. Along side the poetry there will be face painting, crafts and food.

“We originally were going to release butterflies at this farm,” said Juri Garone, co-chair of the Weston Domestic Violence Task Force. In the near future they will be planning butterfly bushes at some of the safe houses maintained by the Domestic Violence Crisis Center, which serves Weston.

The butterfly, Garone said, is a symbol of independence, survival and hope for survivors and victims of domestic violence and that was the theme they were trying to go with.

“The poetry is all empowerment, lifting of the spirit and survival and I think that goes very well and speaks to victims,” Garone said.

The poems were all chosen and will be read by Weston High School Asst. Principal Dr. Michael Marotto, and Garone said they were all female poets with messages of empowerment and hope.

Along with the poems, Weston First Selectman Gail Weinsten will have a proclamation for the event, and a violinist from Weston High School will be playing with the poetry.

“We just envisioned it about raising awareness and support,” Garone said. “It’s not just a problem that plagues people with no money. It cuts across all kinds of boundaries.”

The event will last from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are welcome to attend. The task force will also be collecting items needed at the safe houses including phone cards, diapers, feminine products, towels, gift cards and blankets.
