Steam Coffee Bar, a new locally owned business, is set to open next month in the recently renovated station house, according to co-owner Briana Pennell, a trained pastry chef. A second shop will also open at the Greens Farms station, replacing the current tenant, she said.
“These will be our first shops, and we are very excited,” said Pennell, a Norwalk resident who grew up in Weston. She’s opening the business with Stamford resident Chris Barrett.
In addition to coffee, Steam will offer tea, espresso and a variety of "sweet and savory foods," like pastries, bagels, sandwiches, salads, paninis and other grab-and-go items — all sourced from local vendors, Pennell said. Participating vendors will include Raus Coffee, SoNo Bakery, Arogya Tea, Red Bee Honey and Nothin’ But Foods. Wave Hill Breads, Pennell said, may also be a vendor.
“We’re all about locally acquired, chef-inspired foods,” she said. “Everything, from our dairy products to our pastries, is local.”
Because the shops will be retail-only, all food items will be delivered fresh daily, Pennell said. In addition to food and drink, Steam will also sell flowers from local florists and items such as newspapers, she said.
Pennell and Barrett were at the eastbound station house in Saugatuck on Monday afternoon handing out free samples after a ribbon-cutting ceremony there. The event, which included Gov. Dannel Malloy, First Selectman Gordon Joseloff, Westport state Rep. Jonathan Steinberg and other dignitaries, celebrated the renovation of the pre-Civil War era building, the solar panels that were recently installed on its roof and the new electric car-charging stations installed in the eastbound parking lot.
The 27-kilowatt solar panel system, installed by Encon Solar, powers the station house, platform lights and the four car-charging stations located next to the building, said Westport Building Official Stephen Smith. These solar-powered electric car charging stations are the first to be installed on Metro-North’s New Haven Line.
