“People need more to do around here beside going out for dinner or drinks,” said Westport resident Janice McGuire, who co-owns the studio with longtime friend and fellow Westporter Ellen Meehan. “We’re providing people a place they can go out, have fun, socialize and be creative.”
The studio, located in the Pier 1 Imports plaza at 1460 Post Road E., opened last Friday. It is the first Painting With A Twist studio to open in the state. Nationwide, there are more than 100 studios.
Led by local art instructors, classes are based on a specific painting. During the class, guests re-create that painting on a bare canvas— which they get to bring home at the end of the class, Meehan said.
The classes offered at Painting With A Twist are designed for everyone, said Meehan, not just people who consider themselves artists.
“It’s not about the outcome of the painting, but the experience you had painting it,” Meehan said. “Our priority is to make sure everyone that walks through our door has a good time. It’s not about using art terms. There’s no negativity, no judgment.”
Painting With A Twist offers two- and three-hour classes. All painting supplies and tools, including canvases, are provided. The only thing guests are asked to bring is their favorite wine or other beverage, snacks and ice. Cups, corkscrews and plates are also provided.
In addition to regular classes, Painting With A Twist offers private parties and off-sites classes, McGuire said.
