STRATFORD, Conn. -- Stratford Mayor John Harkins wants to raze the building of the decommissioned Center School in favor of a transit-oriented development, while the Town Council believes it should be reopened, according to the Connecticut Post.

Harkins and his team maintain that a transit-oriented development with a parking garage, apartments and shops would make Stratford "more vibrant" and bring in tax dollars, the Connecticut Post said.

The council said children in the center of Stratford spend too much time on the bus, and critics noted the usage of portable classrooms while there's a school closed, reported the Connecticut Post.

Board of Education chairman Jim Feehan said the price of bringing the school up to today's building codes and standards would be expensive and portable classroom provide the same education, the Connecticut Post said.
