Stratford Council Edges Closer to Closing Budget Gap

STRATFORD, Conn. -- Stratford has a looming deficit of over $5 million, and the Town Council is taking steps, but isn't there yet. At the council's special meeting on Thursday, Feb. 25, council members voted by a margin of 7-2 to transfer $3 million from the town's internal service fund, according to the Stratford Star.

At an Ordinance Committee meeting last Monday, council members Marianne Antezzo and Tina Manus brought forward an ordinance to reduce spending by $2.73 million, the Stratford Star reported. But the ordinance hadn't been available for review before the meeting Finance Director Susan Collier said, so she couldn't advise about it yet.

Collier noted that she could have a budget-gap proposal ready by March 7, a week before the next council meeting, according to the Stratford Star. The budget deficit is the result of residents voting down the sale of the Water Pollution Control Authority plant.
