STRATFORD, Conn. -- The Republican candidate to fill the vacancy in the Town Council’s Fifth District withdrew his name for consideration, leaving just two contenders in the race, according to the Stratford Star.

Joe Gresko stepped down from the Town Council in Stratford to devote more time to state issues. A special election will be held next month to fill his seat.

James Duffy bowed out of the special election, scheduled for Oct. 13, the Star said. Democrat Gregg Gan and petitioning candidate John Dempsey will now be on the only names on the ballot. The seat opened in May when state Rep. Joe Gresko resigned to devote more attention to state matters.

Duffy said he would not be able to dedicate time to the position, according to the Star, in announcing his decision to withdraw.
