Two Stratford Businesses Sold Tobacco To Minors, Police Say

STRATFORD, Conn. -- Two Stratford businesses were cited for selling cigarettes to minors after police conducted more than a dozen "unannounced inspections" in May, according to authorities.

Stratford police, in conjunction with the state, conducted a sting operation in May that resulted in two local businesses being charged with selling tobacco to minors.

Police sent an undercover youth to 15 stores to try to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Snagged in the sting were: Wheels, a convenience store at 440 Lordship Blvd.; and Honeyspot Motor Lodge, 360 Honeyspot Road, police said.

The offending clerks, police said, were ticketed and now face fines of $200.

The owners could also be hit with “administrative sanctions” from the Department of Revenue Services, the state agency that issues licenses to cigarette dealers, police said.

The operation was conducted under the jurisdiction of the state’s Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and its Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program.

Police said the following businesses were found to be in compliance with the law: Diamond Fuels Snaxx Plus, 336 Ferry Blvd.; Stratford Food Center, 11 Woodend Road; Turbo News, 1140 Main St.; Sam’s News, 60 Access Road; Lordship Shell, 145 Lordship Blvd.; Cigarette Outlet, 665 Honeyspot Road; Honeysport Gulf, 245 Honeyspot Road; Sunoco, 1240 Stratford Ave.; Beans and Leaves, 106 Stratford Ave.; Cumberland Farms, 1290 W. Broad St.; Royal Smoke Shop, 1277 W. Broad St.; Last Call Wine and Spirits, 2385 Main St.; and EZ Stop, 3355 Main St.
