STRATFORD, Conn. — A Stratford officer shot a man who had approached police with a handgun and opened fire early Wednesday morning, State Police spokeswoman Kelly Grant said.
At about 4:45 a.m., Stratford police responded to the Lordship neighborhood by Russian Beach on reports of man with a gun, Grant said.
Stratford Police officers found the man with a handgun, she said. When officers ordered the man to drop the gun, he advanced toward officers and fired at least one round at police, Grant said.
At least one Stratford officer fired at least one round, striking the armed man, she said.
First aid was administered, and the man was transported to Bridgeport Hospital for evaluation, Grant said.
At about 6:30 a.m. detectives from State Police Western District Major Crime Squad responded and took command of the investigation, she said.
Police remained on the scene into late Wednesday morning. Police did not release the man's condition, injuries or identity.
