STRATFORD, Conn. — A Stratford man who dropped a box containing $20,000 worth of heroin when he tried to flee as he was arrested will spend 57 months behind bars in a federal prison, prosecutors said.

Anthony Lee Parowski, 30, was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in Bridgeport to 57 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for distributing heroin, said U.S. Attorney for Connecticut John H. Durham.

According to court documents and statements made in court, in March 2017, the DEA’s Bridgeport High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force and Milford Police Department received information that Parowski was distributing heroin to numerous individuals.

In April, investigators conducted two controlled purchases of heroin from Parowski, the second of which occurred in a Milford motel room that he had rented.

On April 20, investigators approached Parowski as he left the motel carrying a cardboard box. He dropped the box and ran, discarding items as he fled.

He was apprehended after a brief pursuit and arrested. A search of Parowski, the cardboard box and the area of the chase turned up 190 dose bags of heroin, 66 grams of additional heroin, and items used to process and package heroin for street sale.

A subsequent search of his Stratford residence turned up $32,210 in cash.

Milford police used K9 officer Cedar, a trained narcotics detection dog, to recover the evidence that Parowski discarded. Police said the recovered heroin had an approximate street value of $15,000 to $20,000.

Parowski has been detained since his federal arrest on April 25. On July 25, he pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of heroin.

Bolden also ordered Parowski to forfeit the cash seized from his residence.
