Stratford Clergy, Choir Lift Voices To Honor Life Of MLK Jr.

STRATFORD, Conn. — The Stratford Clergy Association held a worship service celebrating the life and work of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Sunday afternoon at the First Congregational Church of Stratford.

The Rev. Simeon Law, pastor of Stratford United Methodist Church, gave the sermon. A number of other area clergy also participated in the service.

Special music was provided by Joe Utterback, music director at First Congregational Church.

Donations collected at the event will be used to fund scholarships at Stratford’s two high schools.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially established as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986. Federal, state and local offices will be closed as well as schools and many workplaces on Monday, Jan. 19. 

King was a minister, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is renowned for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. He was assassinated April 4, 1968.
