New York Man Sentenced For Trafficking Heroin In Connecticut

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- A former New York resident with ties to a heroin distribution ring in Connecticut was sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford on June 7, followed by five years of supervised release, according to Deirdre M. Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Carlos Gabriel Estevez, 24, formerly of Ozone Park, N.Y., was a member of a large heroin organization headed by the Estevez family who lived in New York and the Dominican Republic. The organization distributed wholesale quantities of heroin to customers in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, according to Daly.

According to court documents and statements made in court, the Drug Enforcement Agency New Haven Task Force began investigating the Estevez organization in March 2013. On Dec. 31, 2013, in response to intercepts of calls and texts, investigators watched a co-defendant as he drove from Connecticut to a parking lot in New Rochelle, where Estevez met him and provided him with two brick-like packages.

Following the meeting, a Connecticut State Police trooper pulled over the co-defendant as he was driving on I-95 in Milford and seized two bricks of heroin, each weighing approximately 500 grams, from a natural cavity in the vehicle’s wall, Daly said.

Estevez's brothers, Jimmy Estevez, 25, of Brooklyn, and Miguel, “Domi,” 27, of the Bronx, were both sentenced earlier this year to 60 months behind bars, to be followed by four years of supervised release in a separate trafficking case in which they sold heroin to a Hartford man who bought large amounts of heroin from the crew.

Estevez has been detained since his arrest on Sept. 11, 2014. A jury found him guilty of one count of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin, and one count of possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of, one kilogram or more of heroin in December 2015.

Judge Shea found that he was responsible for the distribution of at least 30 kilograms of heroin.

The case was investigated by the DEA New Haven Task Force, with the assistance of the DEA Hartford Task Force and the DEA in New York. The DEA New Haven Task Force includes participants from the New Haven, Hamden, West Haven, North Haven, East Haven, Branford, Ansonia, Meriden and Derby Police Departments, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
