STRATFORD, Con. — Friends are rallying to help the bartender who was shot by an armed robber on Tuesday evening in Stratford Center.

Petra Peniastek of Bridgeport has created a GoFundMe campaign called, "Helping our dear friend, Regi!” to help cover medical expenses for the man, who was shot in the abdomen.

"Our friend Regi Woodard was working at the bar 'Bar' in Stratford when an armed robbery occurred. As we all heard on the news — an unidentified man demanded money, which Regi handed over, but the man still shot him in his abdomen," the webpage says.

The shooting occurred at the bar, which is located on Main Street in Stratford Center, shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, police Capt. Frank Eannotti said in a statement. After Woodward handed over the cash, he was shot once in the abdomen, police said.

Police said Woodard was in stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital on Wednesday after undergoing surgery.

"We are hopeful that he will get through this," the GoFundMe campaign says. "We wanna get together and help our dear friend in his time of need! Medical bills will be extensive and we have to help his family deal with them. He’s a well-respected man and an amazing friend."

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting, and released photos of a suspect on Wednesday. The photos show the suspect pointing a handgun with his left hand. The suspect is in mostly dark clothing, with what appears to be a gray sweatshirt or jacket, with the hood over his head, and much of his face covered.
