With downpours occurring across Fairfield County on Sunday, Surf Avenue in Stratford was under water. The flooding forced the state Department of Transportation to close Exit 30 off I-95 for part of the day.
"With heavy rains expected please use caution and do not make any attempts to drive through standing water. If you become stranded due to rising water please stay in your vehicle," the Stratford Professional Firefighters IAFF 998 posted on Facebook.
Roadway flooding can cause a number of hazards, including the displacement of manhole covers, which in turn can create a submersion hazard if you attempt to walk through the standing water, firefighters warned.
A total of 1 to 2 inches of rain was expected Sunday before the weather cleared in the evening and temperatures dropped below freezing.
Rainfall totals reported Sunday by the National Weather Service included:
- Brookfield; 1.37 inches, at 12:15 p.m.
- Stamford; 1.30 inches reported at 10 a.m.
- Bridgeport's Sikorsky Airport in Stratford: 1.12 inches, 10:30 a.m.
Some earlier large power outages had been restored by 1:30 p.m., but some small outages were still reported by Eversource in Greenwich (1 customer), Westport (28), Weston (5), Redding (25), Newtown (2), Monroe (2) and Brookfield (11).
United Illuminating was still reporting large power outages in

- Easton: 26
- Fairfield: 137
- Shelton: 710
- Stratford: 787
