There are over 15,000 people in Milford and Stratford who do not have a high school diploma and over 1,600 adults unable to speak fluently in English, according to Literacy Volunteers, citing the Milford and Stratford School District Strategic School Profile, 2012-2013.
The organization has a new satellite office at the Stratford Library where free tutoring classes for new volunteers are about to begin.
The following if offered:
- Tutor Training, Fanny Beach Community Center, 16 Dixon Street, Milford, Wednesday, Jan. 25, Feb 1, 8, 15 and 22, 6 to 8:30 p.m.
- Tutor Training, Stratford Library, 2203 Main St. Stratford, Feb. 15, 22, 6 to 8 p.m.; March 1, 8, 15, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
No previous teaching experience is required. All prospective tutors will be interviewed in advance.

Volunteers interested in helping students prepare for a GED (General Equivalency Diploma) examination, or prefer to help adult students with basic literacy skills, may call 203-878-4800 to schedule a meeting.
