Author Brings Benedict Arnold Talk To Stratford Library

STRATFORD, Conn. -- The Stratford Library will return in 2016 with “Sunday Afternoon Talks,” its monthly series of informative and entertaining talks featuring prominent local guest speakers.

The first one will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 10 in the Stratford Library’s Lovell Room with University of Bridgeport Professor Eric Lehman.

Lehman will discuss: “Homegrown Terror: Benedict Arnold and the Burning of New London,” based on his latest book about Connecticut’s most notorious citizen.

On Sept. 6, 1781, Arnold and a force of 1,600 British soldiers and loyalists took Fort Griswold and burnt New London to the ground.

Lehman’s new book chronicles the events leading up to this attack, showing the dramatic transformation of Arnold and the point at which he went from betraying his comrades to massacring his neighbors.

Lehman’s published works include "Becoming Tom Thumb: Charles Stratton, P.T. Barnum, and the Dawn of American Celebrity," "Literary Connecticut, A History of Connecticut Food" and "Bridgeport: Tales from the Park City" among many others.

The talk is free and open to all. Autographed copies of his latest will be available for purchase after the talk.
