On Aug. 20, the Short Beach Park Commission and Friends of Short Beach will unveil new Mobi-mat beach access mats that allow people who would otherwise have difficulty maneuvering in the sand to stroll down to the shore with ease.
The park commission started the project in 2015, when a local mom expressed her dream of taking her son to the beach in his wheelchair. Members spent 18 months researching the plan and securing grant funding.
The new mats, which are military inspired and ADA approved, were created by Deschamps Mats Systems, Inc.
The public is invited to the 2 p.m. ribbon cutting. Expected guests include Mayor John Harkins, state Reps. Joe Gresko and Laura Hoydick, state Sen. Kevin Kelly and members of the Town Council.
