STRATFORD, Conn. -- The classic hot dog, in all its bronzed, charred perfection, holds a special place in the hearts – and stomachs -- of most Americans, especially come summer. July, in fact, is National Hot Dog Month, thanks to the designation by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.

Frank Talk: This frozen-in-time fast food joint, located under the I-95 overpass, dishes out dogs that are made by Hummel Bros. of New Haven and are only distributed locally. Fans swear they are as good, if not better than, more nationally known brands as Sabrett. Their chili sauce -- which is thin and red-hot as opposed to meaty and thick -- is based on an old family recipe developed by Gasper Kuhn Jr. in the 1940s when he and his dad had a hot dog stand in Fairfield. The incendiary, but addictive, sauce is still made by the Kuhn family. Danny's, named for the original owner Danny Smith, was opened in 1935.

Top This: The dogs, which are deep fried, have a natural casing and a nice snap that is not overwhelmed by their generous toppings. Customer favs include the spicy Devil Dog, the Bull Dog (named after the U.S. Marine Corp’s mascot) with fried onions and chili, and the Southern Dog, with barbecued pulled pork and jalapeño peppers.
