“It offers a lot of things that other gyms in town don’t,” said Economic Development Supervisor Amy Knorr, who helped shepherd the project along.
The 50,000-square-foot space, formerly the Regal Cinemas Stadium 14, houses a three-lane swimming pool, cardio and aerobics space, a cycling room, racquetball courts, a sauna and whirlpool, and a regulation-size basketball court and more.
“It also offers a lot in tax revenue,” said Karen Kaiser, the town’s director of economic development.
The public is invited to the club’s official grand opening Saturday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors may take a tour or try a free Zumba class and complimentary healthy snacks. There will be balloons and face painting for the kids and a grand prize giveaway of an iPad.
General Manager Marvin Michel said the site employs about 30 staffers — and most of them are full-time workers.
Michel, who previously oversaw an LA Fitness in Springfield, Mass., said the space will offer a full range of classes, including aqua fit, aerobics, Zumba, mat Pilates, cycle zone, body works, yoga, kickboxing and conditioning.
“We also have a daycare, which a lot of gyms don’t have,” he said.
Mayor John Harkins and Mary Dean, executive director of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, were also on hand for the ribbon-cutting.
“This is a great space,” Dean said.
LA Fitness is located at 411 Barnum Avenue Cutoff. It is open Mondays through Thursdays from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., Fridays from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
