STAMFORD, Conn. The National Weather Service has issued hurricane and flood watch warnings for Stamford as Hurricane Irene approaches for this weekend.
The hurricane watch currently predicts that there is a 4 to 11 percent chance of hurricane conditions and up to 72 percent chance of tropical storm conditions for the area. High winds are expected to start Saturday night after midnight, the warning said.
The flood watch officially begins Saturday night when the storm is slated to begin and stay in effect until Sunday evening after the storm leaves, the warning said. The amount of rain expected with Hurricane Irene may cause stream and river flooding as well as in poor drainage areas, the warning said.
The warning added that people living in flood risk areas should prepare to take action and to keep monitoring weather reports as the storm nears. The hurricane watch said it is too early to predict the exact size of storm surge and storm tide, but it could be up to several feet.
