Stamford Mayor to Lift Snow Emergency

Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia said he planned to lift the snow emergency by mid-afternoon Monday as conditions rapidly returned to normal after Sunday's blizzard.

"I was pleasantly surprised this morning when most of the major roads were cleared as this was a tough storm to clean up," Pavia said.

Stamford's Director of Operations Ernie Orgera, who was proud of his road crews for getting an early jump on the storm, updated the mayor on the city's road conditions.

"Our crews starting spreading salt brine late Sunday morning in preparation for the storm. When the snow did hit, we were able to clear the streets quickly and get ready for the next layer," Orgera said.

The 58 trucks in Stamford cleared all 54 snow emergency routes very early in the storm so that snow and ice didn't build up as heavily.

"One of the biggest problems we faced was the high number of vehicles that got stuck in intersections while trying to drive through the snow," Orgera said.

Both Pavia and Orgera praised the Stamford highway and roads crews for their work.

Not everything was back to normal. As of 2 p.m., 1,809 customers in Stamford were still without power, according to Connecticut Light & Power.
