Stamford Lifts Snow Emergency Parking Ban

Mayor Michael Pavia has lifted the snow emergency that was part of Stamford’s response to Sunday’s storm. The emergency banned parking on designated streets to allow more efficient removal of the one-foot-plus of snow that fell on the area. The ban was ended effective 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29.

“Snow removal is significantly more difficult due to the inability of plows to clear the snow from curb to curb,” said Pavia in a release. “Considering these obstacles, the City crews did an excellent job of making our streets safe and passable.”

City crews worked around the clock to ensure that major roads were safe within 24 hours, the release said. Pavia’s office said Stamford received the fourth-highest snow accumulation in the state, 16.4 inches, according to the Connecticut Weather Center.

“What made snow removal especially difficult for this storm was the tremendous volume of snow and the limited space to push back to on the streets,” said Ernie Orgera, the city’s director of operations. He noted, however, that not all motorists heeded the parking ban.

“Many residents disregarded designated Snow Emergency regulations and left vehicles parked on restricted Snow Emergency Routes.”
